EGR Valve Blocked? Reduced Engine Performance and Warning Lights Could Be the Cause

Has your diesel vehicle lost power, gone into limp mode or displayed a Check Engine Light?

During a recent inspection at K Automotive Mechanic Repairs, we found the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system heavily restricted with carbon build-up, affecting engine performance and airflow.

The EGR system plays an important role in reducing emissions by recirculating a portion of exhaust gases back into the engine. Over time, soot and carbon deposits can accumulate inside the EGR valve and intake system, causing the valve to stick or become partially blocked.

Common Symptoms of a Blocked EGR Valve

A blocked or restricted EGR system can cause:

  • Check Engine Light

  • Reduced engine power

  • Limp mode

  • Rough idle

  • Increased fuel consumption

  • Poor acceleration

  • Excessive smoke from the exhaust

  • Engine hesitation

These symptoms are commonly seen on diesel vehicles, particularly those used for frequent short trips or stop-start driving.

What Causes EGR Carbon Build-Up?

Over time, exhaust soot and oil vapours can combine and form carbon deposits inside the EGR valve and intake system.

Contributing factors may include:

  • Frequent short trips

  • Stop-start driving

  • High kilometre vehicles

  • Diesel engine operation

  • Restricted DPF systems

As the build-up increases, airflow becomes restricted and the EGR valve may no longer operate correctly.

EGR Cleaning and Inspection

In many cases, the EGR valve and associated components can be removed, inspected and cleaned to restore proper operation.

At K Automotive, we inspect the condition of the EGR system and advise whether cleaning is suitable or if further repairs may be required.

Where possible, we provide photos and videos of inspection findings so customers can clearly see the carbon build-up and understand the recommended repairs.
